How To Easily Make Authentic Chicken Jambalaya

Jambalaya is a one-pot dish similar to Jollof rice.

Jambalaya is a spicy, seasoned rice dish that is often flavored with mixes of meat, poultry or seafood. Jambalaya is best known as Louisiana’s premier Creole dish of Spanish and French influence.

Jambalaya is one of the most requested foods by visitors to Louisiana. In Louisiana, at any event serving jambalaya, the more people you see eating it, the merrier the celebration will be.

There are many variations on Jambalaya

Recipes can include beef, fresh pork, chicken, duck, shrimp, oysters, crayfish or sausage, combined typically with onions, garlic, tomatoes, cayenne pepper, green peppers, celery and other seasoning and long grained white rice.

Preparation of jambalaya involves creating a stock from vegetables, meat, and seafood followed by white long grained rice. As the rice cooks, it absorbs the many flavors of the ingredients. Cooking in one pot and toss everything in the mix allows the many flavors to commingle and become rich and hearty.

When preparing jambalaya, after the rice has been added, it should be turned but never stirred. This prevents the grains of rice from breaking up.

Jambalaya is turned just three times after the rice is added by scooping from the bottom of the pot to mix the rice evenly with the many other ingredients. You can use a large spoon or very large spatula to do the turning, depending on the size of the pot.

Jambalaya is made in three parts, with meats and vegetables, and is completed by adding stock and rice. In a large saucepan (pot) heat oil over high heat with onion, pepper and celery. Add garlic, tomatoes, peppers or hot sauces.

Stir in rice and slowly add your water or broth. Reduce heat to medium and cook until rice absorbs liquid and becomes tender, stirring (turning) occasionally, about 15 minutes. When rice is just tender add chicken and cook until the poultry is done about 10 minutes. Season to taste and serve. That sounds like a lot of work in the kitchen, right?
